Kilimanjaro Routes

Kilimanjaro Routes

There are seven established routes to use while climbing Kilimanjaro. They vary in length and difficulty. All except one require you to camp. If you climb Kilimanjaro on the Marangu route your accommodation is in huts and camping is not allowed. Five days is the absolute minimum duration for a Kilimanjaro climb, six is better. If climbing using the Machame route six days is the minimum, seven days is recommended. Taking an extra day for acclimatization will greatly improve your chances to reach the summit.

Book any of our Kilimanjaro packages at our current prices, you can cancel your booking at any time for any reason and receive a full refund or reschedule your trip to any future dates without risk of price increases. Solo & couples travelling on a budget, we highly recommend you check on our Kilimanjaro Open Dates to Join for 2021 & 2022 page. Climb Kili by Marangu Route

This route starts from the south-east giving you an opportunity to sleep in the Huts, it is the only of its kind in entire Kilimanjaro routes. The locals and tourist call it Coca-cola route as it is cheaper, least crowded and easier to climb than Machame route. Spending an extra day is highly recommended for proper acclimatization. You will ascend to the summit and descend back to the gate on the same path.

There are 60 bunk beds each at Mandara and Kibo Huts, and 120 bunk beds at Horombo Hut. Guests are supplied with mattresses and pillows, but sleeping bags are still required. The huts have communal dining halls and basic washrooms, ranging from flushing toilets and running water at the lower huts to long drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut.

Climb Kili by Machame Route

Known as the “Whiskey” route, the Machame route is now the most popular route on the mountain. Compared with Marangu, the days on Machame are longer and the walks are steeper. The Machame route is considered a difficult route, and is better suited for more adventurous folks and those with some hiking or backpacking experience. Groups to join available - Year round departures.

Climb Kili by Lemosho Route

This route begins in the west and rather than simply intersecting Shira Plateau (like Machame), Lemosho crosses it from Shira Ridge to Shira Camp. Climbers encounter low traffic until the route joins the Machame route. Afterwards, Lemosho follows the same route through Lava Tower, Barranco and Barafu, known as the southern circuit. Groups to join available - Year round departures.

Climb Kili by Rongai Route

Rongai is the only route starting on the northern slope of Kilimanjaro. Though this part of the Mountain is rarely visited by hikers, it is not less interesting than the popular southern and western slopes. We recommend Rongai to all those who like reclusive hiking experiences.

Getting to the trailhead - Nalemuru Gate - usually takes 2-3 hours from Panama Inn Hotel in Moshi town.

Rongai is also the only route that passes by Mawenzi, one of the three volcanic cones of Kilimanjaro and the third highest peak in Africa. The way back lies through Marangu,  and thus you will be able to see both sides of the mountain.

Climb Kili by Umbwe Route

Daring experienced climbers seeking adventure and challenge will find just what they want on Umbwe. A short steep climb traversing all the climate zones - from tropical rainforest to eternal ice - will put your strength and endurance to the test. Like no other route on Kilimanjaro Umbwe gives a sense of achievement to those who reach the summit.

Your first day on the mountain will start from Umbwe Gate and continue with a lengthy trek to the first camp on your way - Umbwe camp. In spite of the challenge that Umbwe poses to hikers, well thought-out location of camps will contribute to proper acclimatization.

Climb Kili by Shira Route

The Shira Route is used by very few mountain visitors who climb Kilimanjaro. It has been largely replaced by the Lemosho Route, which is almost identical. It is mainly used for quick access for rescue work and for hardy climbers who especially request this route for its isolation

On the first day you begin at Shira Gate to Simba Camp before joining the Lemosho Route on day two at Shira Camp 2. The high starting point is however a major negative for this route as many experience altitude sickness from day one without enough time to acclimatize.

The route over the Shira Plateau has several possible variations. After Shira Camp 2 the route joins the Machame Route via Lava Tower, and then descends to the Barranco Camp via the Southern Circuit. Ascent to Uhuru Peak is made via Barafu Camp and up the southern slopes of Kibo. Your initial two days on the mountain are less crowded than on most other routes.

Kili by Northern Circuit Route

The Northern Circuit Route is the longest route on Kilimanjaro, a nine day trip initially ascending Lemosho route on the western side of the mountain up onto the Shira Plateau before reaching the Lava Tower, then heading north and circumnavigating the main summit massif in a clockwise direction and joining up with the Rongai route. The summit is then climbed from the eastern side of the mountain and the descent is straight down via the southern Mweka route.

Understandably this is also known as the Grand Traverse or the 360 Route and offers the complete Kilimanjaro experience in terms of all the habitats and the views of the mountain from all sides. The longer journey has excellent acclimatization and stunning scenery with views across the southern flanks, western forests, the northern plains to the Kenyan border and the arid eastern slopes. The paths are comparatively quiet and less used.

Kilimanjaro Crater Camp, A Night at Crater Camp Can be Added to Most Routes

After summiting Uhuru Peak, you head down into the crater and set camp at an altitude of 5,790m in a harsh lunar landscape. This gives you the day to explore the frankly astonishing sites of the crater before heading back the next morning to catch the sunrise on the crater rim.

For those who can bare the physical discomfort, Crater Camp is often the highlight of Kilimanjaro. The landscape is the closest you will ever come to stepping onto the moon. The floor of the summit is covered in deep ash sands and lumps of raw volcanic rock. A deep blue glacier sits within the crater, begging to be explored whilst in the middle is the frankly terrifying ash pit, reminiscent of Star Wars barbed hole in the desert sand. Read More>>
